Previously inhabited by differing Indian tribes, Spain occupied
the country in 1552. In 1821 it gained independence, to join
with Mexico and The United Provinces of Central America and in
1838 became an independent republic. Several times during the
20th Century, U.S. Marines occupied the country, most recently
from 1926 to 1933. In 1967 General Anastasio Somoza-Debayle was
elected President, resigned in 1972 and was elected again in
1974. Marxist Sandinista guerrillas kidnapped several government
officials in December 1974 and Martial Law was declared. By
1978, general opposition to the government had spread throughout
the country and by August, civil war had broken out. On July 17,
1979, Somoza resigned and fled the country. The Sandinista
government has received military aid from Cuba and the Soviet
Union, while aiding guerrillas in El Salvador has caused tensions
and a deterioration of relations with the United States. In June
1986, the United States House of Representatives approved over
$100 million of aid to the Nicaraguan contras fighting to remove
the Sandinista regime.
